The Vasectomy Procedure, Step by Step

Learn how our Austin urologists perform the vasectomy procedure, step by step

There’s a lot to like about our single incision, single visit vasectomy. We do things that other urology practices may not do to make our minimally invasive procedure as comfortable, convenient and effective as possible. Get the details of our vasectomy procedure, step by step.

Your single visit vasectomy begins with a consultation before surgery in the office

Before your procedure, your urologist will have a vasectomy pre-procedure consultation with you to explain the procedure and answer your vasectomy FAQs. This takes about 15 or 20 minutes.

When you schedule your single visit vasectomy procedure, our team will send you instructions on how to prepare for your vasectomy. If you have followed your instructions, you will be ready for your procedure after your consultation.

What you need to know about the vasectomy procedure, step by step

When you enter the procedure room in our office, our team will administer vasectomy anesthesia. This consists of local anesthesia alone, or local along with the IV sedation option, available free of charge. Our team applies local anesthesia with a needleless, auto-injector system that directs numbing lidocaine into your scrotal skin.

Here is what our Austin urologists do during your vasectomy procedure, step by step.

  1. Our urologist makes a single incision in the middle part of your scrotum.
  2. The surgeon locates your left vas deferens and clamps it, using a special no-scalpel technique, clearing the vas deferens of any nerve or vascular tissue. This extra step significantly helps reduce post-op pain and discomfort.
  3. After our urologist severs the left vas deferens, he ties off the end coming from the testicle. He cauterizes the other end that goes to your prostate. This is a unique, reverse-open-ended technique that helps you avoid complications such as sperm granuloma, neuromas and nerve entrapment.
  4. When we finish with the left vas deferens, our surgeon moves to the right vas deferens and repeats the second and third steps on that side.
  5. Next, we check for signs of bleeding. If everything looks good, our urologist uses a single, dissolvable stitch to close the skin of your scrotum.
  6. The entire procedure takes between five and 12 minutes. After the procedure, our team members walk you out to the waiting room to your designated driver, and you can go home. We will send you home with advice and instructions on what to expect after your vasectomy. Don’t worry — we are available 24/7 to answer your calls and questions.

What makes our Austin urologists different, in a good way

The basics of any vasectomy are the same, but it’s the details that make a big difference for our patients. The details of our vasectomy procedure, step by step, mean more convenience, fewer complications and less pain.

  • We provide a convenient, single visit vasectomy.
  • We use a single incision procedure, which is not offered by all urologists.
  • We don’t use metal clips. Instead, we use dissolvable stitches. Using a stitch means you don’t have to walk around with metal clips inside your body. This change also helps reduce short- and long-term discomfort.
