Premature ejaculation treatment can provide peace of mind
Premature ejaculation, or PE, can be very frustrating for men, but it is common and often treatable. The first step toward premature ejaculation treatment is seeing a urologist for diagnosis. Our North Austin urologists have several options for PE treatment, which can help improve symptoms and men’s quality of life.
During the diagnosis process, your urologist will help you identify the cause of your PE, and this will determine the recommended treatment. Generally, the causes fall under the categories of psychological or physical. Potential PE treatment may include mental health therapy, medication or behavior modification.
For men with erectile dysfunction, being treated for ED will often resolve their PE.
Care for your emotional and mental health
If the cause of the premature ejaculation is believed to be psychological, your doctor will likely refer you to a therapist or counselor. Therapy is a premature ejaculation treatment that can provide the opportunity to address underlying causes, such as stress, depression or past sexual issues.
Oral and topical medications in PE treatment
There are no medications currently approved for premature ejaculation treatment, but medications designed for other purposes can provide some benefit. Antidepressants (SSRIs) have been shown to delay ejaculation in some men. Erectile dysfunction medications have also been used to help maintain an erection.
Your urologist may also prescribe an anesthetic cream or spray to be applied to the head of the penis in order to lessen sensation and allow more time before ejaculation.
Change in behaviors for premature ejaculation treatment
Changing your activity before and during sex can be useful in delaying ejaculation.
- Start-stop method: Stimulate your penis until you are close to orgasm, stop briefly until the feeling passes, and then resume stimulation. You or your partner can do this. Continue the pattern a few more times before ejaculation.
- Squeeze method: Similar to the start-stop method, you stimulate your penis until you are close to orgasm and stop and squeeze the head of your penis until the feeling passes. Repeat this method a few times until you orgasm.
- Wear a condom to decrease sensation.
- Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by doing Kegel exercises.
- Masturbate several hours before sex to extend the time of intercourse.
For some men, a combination of treatments works best. Our North Austin urologists want to work with you to help you resolve PE and have an enjoyable, fulfilling sex life.
