Peyronie’s Disease Treatment

Learn about Peyronie’s disease treatment

Peyronie’s disease is a penis curvature during erection. It can be painful and cause difficult intercourse. The misshaping of the penis is caused by scar tissue under the skin, often the result of injury to the penis. In addition to providing Peyronie’s Disease treatment information, our North Austin urology specialists explain the diagnosis, causes, and effects of this condition.

The goals of treatment are to ease pain and allow the man and his partner to have sex. Treatments currently available may decrease the degree of bend in the penis, but they do not eliminate it. If a patient is pain-free and able to have intercourse, the recommendation may be to forgo treatment.

Multiple factors go into the treatment decision. The results of a physical exam, other existing health conditions, and age will be considered. Weighing heavily in the treatment decision is based on whether a man is in the acute (active) phase or chronic (stable) phase of Peyronie’s disease.

Options for Peyronie’s disease treatment

Commonly, medication, either oral or injections, is the first course for Peyronie’s disease treatment. Surgical options are considered for severe cases of penis curvature, and those in which other treatments are ineffective.

Medication to treat penis curvature

  • Oral medications. The goal of oral medications is to improve blood flow to the penis and minimize additional scarring.
  • Injections. Medications are injected into the scar tissue to break it down and loosen the fibers causing the tightness.

Surgical options

  • Our North Austin urology specialists will make a small incision in the scar tissue to release tension or remove part of the scar. A small graft is then placed in the area to try to give additional room for the penis to lengthen.
  • We can place sutures on the opposite side of the penis from the scar tissue to create opposing tension and pull against the bend.
  • We can also implant a prosthetic pump intended to create an erection straight enough for sex.

Seek out professional counseling

No matter what course of Peyronie’s disease treatment a patient pursues, men can benefit from professional counseling.

  • An individual therapist or psychiatrist can address concerns created by Peyronie’s disease, including anxiety, body image issues, or depression.
  • A therapist trained in relationship counseling can help you learn how to communicate with your partner about difficult topics, such as your feelings about sex and intimacy.
  • A sex therapist can help you and your partner find ways to be intimate outside of traditional intercourse. In some cases, the therapist can also provide instruction on ways to have intercourse without pain.

Peyronie’s disease treatment is important because penis curvature rarely resolves or improves on its own. If you have symptoms or are concerned about changes to your penis, contact our North Austin urology specialists for an appointment.
