Cystoscopy is a procedure where a special camera is used to examine the entire bladder lining. A cystoscopy may be used diagnostically, to collect a biopsy, or to remove kidney stones. It is commonly used to evaluate urinary symptoms, blood in the urine, or frequent infections.
• During the procedure a special camera is inserted via the urethra and into the bladder. The bladder is slowly filled with fluid and the doctor is then able to move the camera around the bladder and can see everything in the bladder including the lining. You may experience some discomfort when the camera is inserted and feel a strong urge to urinate. A sample of urine may be taken during the procedure for further laboratory analysis.
• The procedure is performed in our office using local anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes.

Possible Complications include:
• Blood clots in urine.
• Urinary Tract Infection.
• Injury to Bladder or Urethra.
Pre-Procedure Guidelines:
• You will need to have your urine checked for infection in the office before the procedure. Having a urinary infection increases the rate of complications and may cause the procedure to be postponed.
After the Procedure:
• You may see some blood in your urine for a few days after the procedure. Call the office if the amount of bleeding worries you or if you see clots.
• Many people experience frequency and burning with urination just after the procedure. Increasing your fluid intake will help minimize these symptoms.
• Please contact us if you experience any of the following: fever, difficulty urinating, inability to urinate, chills, severe bleeding, or any other symptoms that worry you.
